Can Oprah help save N.J. training?

It is a crazy world, is it not?

Schooling policy for the state’s largest city is being decided on the Oprah Winfrey show. Or, at least, publicized there.

By now, everyone who cares knows that Mark Zuckerberg, who made a fortune 10 times over by creating Facebook, is contributing $ 100 million towards the Newark education system.

Zuckerberg joined with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Gov. Chris Christie to officially unveil the deal on Friday’s “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Is this show business or education? Politics or glamour?

Other than the theatrics of it all, why must folks in Morris County pay attention to this?

For one thing, Newark gets millions of dollars in state money, some of which will come from Morris County. It would be towards the benefit of the state – and the county – if schooling aid towards the metropolis was reduced. Additionally, it is essential to the state as a whole, in fact, to society as a whole, that young people are informed wherever they reside.

Booker, Christie and Zuckerberg held a conference call with the press immediately after taping the show.

The majority of of the questions had been for Booker and Zuckerberg. Can you picture Christie being totally overlooked?

Zuckerberg, 26, stated that he believes in each Christie and Booker. That could possibly be, but, in truth, it is doubtful he is aware of all that much about them.

The real question here has absolutely nothing to do with what Zuckerberg thinks, but how the $ 100 million will probably be utilized. To simplify things, how is this windfall going to improve life for a Newark 4th-grader? That issue was not addressed.

The discussion with Oprah hardly journeyed past generalities, although the governor did hint to his hand a bit on his priorities – charter schools. Christie is really a big proponent of charter schools. Recall that his very first post-election appearance was at the Robert Treat Academy, a charter school on Newark’s north side.

Seated on a stool on the set of the Oprah show, the governor reiterated a story about a Newark mom who said the determing component of regardless of whether her child gets an education or goes to jail is whether or not he gets into a charter school.

Keeping up with the crisis of it all, that mom was portrayed in the movie, “The Cartel,” a documentary which takes a crucial look at public education in New Jersey.

Booker, of course, is regarded as a possible challenger to Christie in the 2013 elections. Now each men have a typical stake in wanting that a lot more children in Newark graduate high school. Which is bipartisanship for you.
